Review: ‘Mulberry Street’

After Dark Horrorfest 2006
Mulberry Street is probably one of the least original but well-shot horror films I’ve seen lately. Directed by first-time helmer Jim Mickle, MS is basically a story about an infestation of human-rat zombies in New York City. For no apparent reason (or, at least none that is explained) rats begin to go “crazy” and start attacking humans in vast numbers. As it turns out, the rats transmit some unknown “virus” to their human victims who then turn into crazed half-human, half-rat zombie killing machines.
As the city rapidly turns red with blood from the overwhelming attacks, the story centers on the tenants of a low-rent apartment building on Mulberry Street. The film attempts to develop the characters to help us empathize with them, but we never really get to know them well enough to any central character. After virtually every character in the movie is [SPOILER BLOCKED], the movie feels a bit disappointing. The special FX make-up is done fairly well, the cinematography and editing is great and the soundtrack/score is great. Unfortunately, the story itself falls short of presenting anything unique or interesting.
Mulberry Street stars Nick Damici, Antone Pagan, Larry Fleischman, Bo Corre and Kim Blair.
